The maintenance-free speed sensors from KES GmbH & Co. KG are used for speed measurement and condition monitoring. The speed is determined in combination with a phonic wheel. The speed is detected by the changes in the magnetic field when a tooth flank passes the sensor.
The KES IG 20 speed sensor family includes a variety of different speed sensors with the following properties:

Single-channel speed sensors
Single-channel speed sensors output a speed signal and have a light indicator. The output signal has a rectangular form, the frequency of which is proportional to the rotational speed of the axle.
Single-channel speed sensors are available in the following variants:
with voltage output
with voltage output and directional signal
- with voltage output and middle voltage
with current output
Multi-channel speed sensors
Multi-channel speed sensors output several speed signals that are independent of each other and have a light indicator that reacts to the output of the first speed channel. The output signals have a rectangular form, the frequency of which is proportional to the rotational speeds of the axle.
The multi-channel speed sensors can be equipped with up to four channels. For example, in the case of four-channel speed sensors with a current output, the speed signals for wheel slide protection/anti-skid protection, traction control, tachograph and door control can be generated independently of each other with a single speed sensor.

Multifunction speed sensors
Multifunctional speed sensors output a speed signal. They also have a temperature sensor and optionally an acceleration sensor as well as a light indicator. The speed output signal has a rectangular form, the frequency of which is proportional to the rotational speed of the axle.
The integrated temperature sensor detects the temperature in the axle bearing area.
Optionally, the multifunction speed sensor can be equipped with an accelerometer, which is used to measure accelerations of the axle perpendicular to the direction of travel. This makes it possible, for example, to detect derailments by continuous interpretation of the sensor data.

with voltage output and integrated temperature sensor
with voltage output, temperature sensor and acceleration sensor
Special speed sensors
Safety speed sensors output a speed signal in rectangular form, the frequency of which is proportional to the rotational speed of the axle. In addition, they have a protective function that switches off the speed sensor if the sensor surface is damaged, thus preventing faulty speed information from being sent to the receiving unit.
