EP/NBÜ

The EP/EBO systems from KES GmbH & Co. KG control the EP function via the standardised UIC control lines. In addition, they signal an activated Passenger Alarm System (PAS) to the train driver. The Emergency Brake Override (EBO) allows the train driver to prevent the application of the automatic emergency brake if necessary. This helps to prevent unwanted emergency stops on dangerous sections of track, such as bridges or tunnels.

Two systems have been established for implementing the EP/EBO functionality in the train:

According to UIC leaflet 541-5 or 541-6
According to the DB system (EN 15179 – Appendix F)

Both systems are based on a (bus) topology consisting of a driver’s cab device on the leading vehicle (EP/EBO) and a device (PAS) in each coupled passenger car.

In both systems, the EP/EBO control of the KES fulfils the extended protection objectives of the TSI.

All devices of the KES EP/EBO system are equipped with their own diagnostic systems and a diagnostic interface and are tested according to the standards EN 50155 and EN 50121-3-2.

EP/EBO for traction units and locomotives according to UIC 541 and the DB system

The Emergency Brake Override (EP/EBO) for traction units and locomotives consists of a modular 19’ rack with plug-in cards, which is installed near the driver's cab. Depending on the selected operating mode (according to UIC-MB 541 or DB system), the device detects whether the Passenger Alarm System (PAS) was activated through the corresponding UIC lines, signals this to the train driver and, if necessary, outputs override signals again. Furthermore, the device detects whether EP brakes are applied and EP is released and also outputs these signals via the corresponding UIC lines. The KES EP/EBO device can be customised for universal use in both EP/EBÜ systems, so that communication with the train driver and train control system can be implemented as required via discrete signals, CANopen, Ethernet or MVB interfaces.

Passenger Alarm System (PAS) for passenger coaches according to UIC 541 and DB system

The Passenger Alarm System (PAS) device is the counterpart to the EP/EBO device and is installed in every passenger coach of the train. It detects when the passenger emergency brake has been applied and, depending on the operating mode of the EP/EBR (in accordance with UIC-MB 541 or the DB system), automatically reports this to the EP/EBO via the corresponding UIC lines. The PAS device reads the override signals issued from the EP/EBO and the EP braking and EP release signals and forwards them to the EP valves.
