In the past years, two different systems for controlling the brake in railed vehicles in the sector of passenger transportation in Europe have been established:

  • Electro-pneumatic brake control according to UIC bulletins 541-5 and 541-6 (NBÜ 2004)
  • Electro-pneumatic brake control using a 13- / 18-pole control lead (UIC 558) according to System DB.

Both systems are based on a (bus) topology which consists of one control device in the leading car and a control device in each coupled passenger coach. The devices are linked by the leads which are used by the respective system.

Both systems dispose of an integrated emergency brake override system (NBÜ) apart from the actual control of the brake. These systems signal to the driver a passenger emergency brake requested by a passenger.

Moreover, it enables the driver to override emergency braking due to an activated passenger emergency brake, in order to avoid a stop of the train at a dangerous place, e. g. in a tunnel and to stop at a more adequate place.
